Applying Technologies in the Context of Problem-Based Learning (PBL)

By combining PBL with collaborative web-based tools, educators can create active, vibrant learning environments that enhance student learning. The use of technology in PBL can provide support and scaffolding for students through various communication and collaboration tools available on-line.  Innovative and current technology can enhance design of challenging problems thus developing students’ cognitive skills.

This workshop is an introduction to those who are considering, or have begun, integrating technology into their problem-based learning practices. It is suitable for lecturers and key academic support staff such as educational developers, curriculum developers and teaching assistants. When adopting relevant technologies and tools, educators often do not fully exploit their potential. Most learning technologies have been directed towards the presentation of content rather than supporting Socratic dialogue or opportunities for collaboration and reflection. The workshop will provide an opportunity for the exploration of key issues such as sound pedagogical strategy; learner and group support; and sustainable content management.

This workshop will also explore the impact of technology on the problem-based learning process, particularly in the development of analytical, creative and critical thinking skills, (as well as for research, production of materials, presentations and collaboration). Technology for conducting, managing and assessing projects efficiently will also be discussed.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • discuss the application of key pedagogical concepts for design of online learning environments for PBL
  • develop implementation strategies for online PBL environments
  • explore strategies for effective facilitation and support in the online PBL environment (managing and scaffolding the online PBL process)
  • identify drivers and/or barriers to student and tutor participation and engagement
  • investigate a variety of innovative learning technologies applicable for use in PBL
  • access and use a repertoire of online activities relevant for PBL
  • evaluate the benefits of using technology to develop strategies for building and moderating PBL virtual discussions
